About strainers
A strainer holds a screen in the pipeline to trap scale, weld slag and other debris before it damages pumps, control valves, meters or spray nozzles. The screen is removed periodically for cleaning.
Y-type or basket?
Y-type strainers are compact and can be fitted in horizontal lines or in vertical lines with downward flow. Basket strainers hold a larger screen, so they collect more debris between cleanings and suit larger flows. They are normally installed in horizontal lines. GMC datasheets cover both types in cast iron, ductile iron and carbon steel.
